CANYON HOUSE
Arroyo Grande, CA
In 1999, our clients purchased an 800 sf bungalow on a 6.3 acre parcel in Arroyo Grande. Their plan was to live in the bungalow while building a larger 2nd dwelling. The new structure would function as a primary residence and gathering place for family and friends.
The owners requested a mediterranean style home that would feel connected to the land, therefore a split-level design was conceived with a stepped slab following the contours of the site. Abundant windows provide visual connection to the surroundings, and multiple exterior spaces allow for indoor outdoor living. Off the study is an arched reading porch. Off the kitchen is a patio for barbeques and dining. Off the primary bedroom is a wood deck and hot tub. And off the garage is a chicken coop and gardening area with raised planting beds. Concrete floors and radiant heating help create an energy efficient comfortable space year-round.
Due to a strict budget and high construction costs, the owners knew that they would need to roll up their sleeves and get involved in construction. Fortunately they had the skills to drywall and finish the second floor, install electrical throughout the house, paint the interiors, and install the exterior fences, retaining walls, decks and landscaping.
Over the years, this beloved home has hosted many family events: weddings, baptisms, birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. It has served the family well.
